ARTS INTEGRATION

Arts Integration : Text

Remix Project

This is a lesson I co-created and taught in my Pre-AP English and AP World history block classes during our Enlightenment Unit. Students chose Enlightenment and Revolution paintings and remixed them through collage to critique the artist's point of view. They could use images, text, and headlines to do so. Through their reflections they had to explain the enlightenment or revolutionary ideas portrayed in the original paintings and what artistic choices they made to critique those ideas. Through their art, they constructed their own meaning of the content. By positioning my learners as artists, they were able to engage with the content in a deeper and more interactive way.

TRANSMEDIATION PROJECT

This is a project I made in my Disciplinary Literacies course. I created a comic strip that taught the concept of moving motif to theme through the metaphor of a magpie building her nest. Transmediation is simply the act of translating meanings from one sign system to another. I translated the meaning of motif and theme into the sign system of graphic novels. This was quite a joy. It was intellectually challenging and creatively fulfilling. Transmediation is a great tool in the classroom to differentiate learning  and graphic novels are a rich way to apply it. They are becoming more and more mainstream in ELA education; this project only elevates the level of sophistication I have to advocate for both the teaching and creation of graphic novels in the classroom. This project offers a structure to implement transmediation projects in future practice.
