With You
By Kaci Egelkraut
When our paths first crossed
You were simply a child.
You begged your mom to bring me home from the store.
Your little hands gripped tight on my cloth.
Dragging me everywhere you could.
From school to relatives.
Teachers always disapproved
They believed you were too attached
But
I was always with you.
Your tears from the dark would soak into my lining.
You were always so afraid of the night
The small closet’s crack of light shining near you
Your only sense of comfort was,
Hiding under me, a worn lavender blanket
You would cower from the demons and the cruel realities of life
And I was always with you
Then your mother took me away
Folded me for the last time
And I was placed in the gloomy cold garage
I don’t remember how long I’ve been here now
But I hope that there’s another blanket for you
Wiping your big tears
Keeping you warm
Protecting you from the demons
And always being with you.
